Game 5

GAME #5

It was a hot night. It was a humid night. It was a sultry night!

Rain fell hard in the form of full gallon buckets of torrential sweat cascading off of each players brow. The outfield was more like a gulf swamp filled with pestering flying pests. We combating softball teams were forced from the familiar grounds of our usual field to a make shift alternate.

But we weren't deterred!

Multigrain fought this day against a worthy rival in the Cannon softball team. The match was an uphill battle with Cannon's deep bench and even deeper batters "pitched" against Multigrains (most of the time) in-fallible defense and persistent base hitting.

Leads were kept small and short lived. Cannon's infield was solid, forcing Multigrain to step up with blistering base hits and sacrifice fly balls. The Multigrain outfield was solid but even our overlaying web of coverage couldn't contain a few of Cannon's Cannons. Multigrain managed to keep an edge over Cannon untill the final inning when they blasted in runs with some very impressive long balls to tie the game. Multigrain had but one chance strike back........ and strike back we did.......

Some guy, named Erik Michael Illies, had been filling the opposing defense with a false sense of security with his consistent ground balls to the third baseman. This brought the outfield in very close each time he was up, which some rumor is exatcly what he intended. In his final at bat the infield positioned themselves for a double play with runners on first and second, and the outfield shortened up the right field and tightened the left. With the pitch in air (EMI) shifted his batting stance, opened his shoulders, and unleashed the fury deep into right field over the fielders head and drove in two runs. The hit could would have been a triple, but overzealous base running got him out at third. But the damage had been done, the game had been won, and a merry time was had by everyone... except Cannon who lost.
